The Reverend

Thomas Hawkins

Our Bridge Pastor, Thomas Hawkins, has served congregations in the Midwest and New England.  He has served as member of a regional church staff in Illinois and has also been a faculty member at McCormick Theological Seminary (PC/USA) in Chicago, where he taught in the field of congregational ministry and faith formation.  He enjoys gardening (and cooking what he grows), baking, and hiking.  He has hiked several long-distance trails in Scotland and England in addition to climbing Mount Katahdin in Maine.  He has spent time at Taize, an ecumenical monastery in France as well as at Iona and Lindisfarne, both of which are centers of learning and prayer for Celtic Christianity.  He is a graduate of the Academy for Spiritual Formation and has completed a certificate program with the Co-Active Coaching Institute.  He is married to Jan Hawkins, with whom he has served as co-pastor in Illinois and Connecticut.  They have two adult children, Robert and Jonathan.  Thomas and Jan currently are pet parents to Winston, a West Highland White Terrier, and Toby, a Norwich Terrier.

Toni Wilcox

Director of Music

Toni has been the organist and choir director here in Hadley for twenty-nine years. She grew up in Shelburne Center and began piano lessons at age six, taught by the Rev. Eleanor Cronk, who served as one of the first female clergy in Franklin County. Toni joined the junior choir in fourth grade, and by sixth grade, she was an accompanist for Sunday School services. Next came senior choir, voice lessons, and singing with the Pioneer Valley Symphony Chorus. By the end of high school, she was learning to play the organ and substituted at several hilltown churches.

Through the years, Toni has participated in many workshops and conferences sponsored by the UCC, watching others, asking questions, and practicing.  She has performed  with several local theater groups in the Greenfield area, sometimes doing one of two musicals a year. Toni recently retired from the Buckland-Shelburne Elementary School in Shelburne Falls, where she had been a Library Manager/Paraprofessional Classroom Aide since 1985.

Toni and husband Ted have been married for 34 years and have a "Brady Bunch" family with six grown children and fifteen grandchildren. They designed their retirement home in Erving around their custom-built dining table that seats fourteen. Family dinners and connecting with grandchildren are very important.

Jean Baxter

Christian Education Director

Jean has been a Sunday School teacher for many, many years, and has been at First Church since 2016. She believes church should be fun, and offers upbeat themes to help kids learn Bible stories, Jesus's teachings, church history, and to explore their own beliefs.

Jean enjoys teaching kids and encourages them to ask "why?" and other "Big Questions." She honors and nurtures everyone's faith journey from toddler to teen without judgment.

Jean lives in Hadley with her husband George Dragon. You'll often find her hanging out with her kids and grandchildren, working on some Girl Scout project, or doing lighting design in some area theater.
